Dans la théorie des avatâras, le point de vue historique est d’une importance capitale, en ce qui concerne, non seulement l’existence de l’Homme-Dieu, mais aussi son degré spirituel : quand une tradition propose ou exige le culte de tel médiateur, elle en garantit du même coup la sainteté. Dès lors que les avatâras répondent à une possibilité, il n’y a plus aucune raison d’admettre que le personnage avatârique n’ait que la valeur d’un symbole; au contraire, il faut admettre, non seulement qu’il est réellement le médiateur céleste, mais qu’il doit même l’être, sans quoi la tradition n’aurait plus aucun sens effectif. Nous ne voyons, ni pourquoi le Ciel tromperait ses fidèles ni surtout pourquoi il serait obligé de les tromper, c’est-à-dire, pourquoi il serait si pauvre, si illogique et si retors. In the theory of Avataras the historical point of view is of capital importance not only with regard to the existence of the God-Man but also regarding his spiritual level: when a tradition proposes or requires the cult of a particular mediator, it guarantees his sanctity by this very fact. Since the Avataras correspond to a possibility, there is no reason for maintaining that the avataric person has the value of a symbol alone; on the contrary it must be admitted not only that he is truly the heavenly mediator but even that he must be so, for otherwise the tradition would have no effective meaning. We do not see why Heaven would deceive those who are faithful to it, still less why it would be obliged to deceive them—why it would be so wretched, illogical, and devious.
