gr. ὑποκείμενον, hypokeímenon (tó): sujeito, substrato, substância. Latim: subjectum, suppositum (sentido lógico). Substância como sujeito, ou seja, como substrato dos acidentes. De hypokeisthai, ficar abaixo, v. ousía. Esse termo já se encontra no tratado Dos princípios   (Peri arkhôn) de Arquitas (cuja autenticidade, aliás, é contestada).

Il s’agit du terme hupokeímenon, central dans la pensée d’Aristote   (voir notamment Métaphysique, Z, 1, 2 et 3). Le substrat, support ou « sujet », est ce qui reçoit la forme, ainsi le bronze qui sert à faire une statue. Toute la mati  ère est pensée par Aristote comme « substrat » ; ce rôle est dévolu au corps chez Plotin  , la matière étant, pour sa part, pensée comme un non-être ; voir traité 12 (II, 4). He designates the ὑποκείμενον as the first being-character. Beings like animals, plants, humans, mountains, and the sun are such that they already “lie there,” “in advance,” ὑπó. When I speak about them, express something about an animal, describe a plant; that about which I speak, the discussed, what I have there in speaking, is in such a way that it is at hand, already lying there in advance.
