Así que tampoco del hombre sabemos nada. Y esta nada es solamente un principio, e incluso solamente el principio de un principio. También en él apuntan y despiertan las palabras originarias: el Sí que crea, el No que engendra, el Y que configura. Y el Sí crea, también en este caso, en el No-nada infinito, el ser verdadero, la esencia.

¿Cuál es el ser verdadero del hombre? El ser de Dios era ser absolutamente, ser allende el saber. El ser del mundo lo era en el saber: era ser consciente, ser universal. ¿Cuál es, frente a Dios y al Mundo, la esencia del Hombre? Goethe nos la enseña: «¿Qué distingue a los Dioses de los hombres? Que ante aquéllos corren muchas olas; a nosotros, en cambio, la ola nos levanta, la ola nos traga, y nos hundimos». Y el Eclesiastés nos enseña: «Una generación va y otra viene; pero la Tierra está ahí eterna» . La fugacidad, el  ser pasajero, ajeno a Dios y a los Dioses y, para el Mundo, la vivencia desconcertante de su propia fuerza que constantemente se renueva, eso es para el hombre la atmósfera perpetua que lo rodea y él absorbe y expulsa con cada golpe de su respiración. El hombre es perecedero. El ser perecedero es su esencia, como es la esencia de Dios ser inmortal e incondicionado, y la esencia del mundo, ser universal y necesario. El ser de Dios es ser en lo incondicionado; el ser del mundo, ser en lo universal; el ser del hombre es ser en lo particular. El saber no está bajo él, como lo está respecto de Dios, ni en tomo a él y en él, como en el caso del Mundo, sino que está sobre él. El Hombre no está más allá de la validez universal y de la necesidad del saber, sino más acá de ellas. No está cuando el saber termina, sino antes de que empiece. Y es sólo porque está antes del saber por lo que sucede que sigue estando después y le lanza a todo saber, por más que éste se haya gloriado de haberlo cogido por completo dentro de los vasos de su validez universal y su necesidad, su grito de victoria: «¡Sigo existiendo!». Es precisamente su esencia que él no se deja meter en una botella; que siempre sigue existiendo; que, en su particularidad, nunca se deja amedrentar por la sentencia del universal; que su propia particularidad no es para él, como el Mundo querría, un acontecimiento, sino lo suyo auto-comprensible, su esencia. Su primera palabra, su Sí originario, afirma su ser propio. En el No sin límites de su nada funda esta afirmación su particularidad, lo suyo propio, como su esencia. Un singular, pues, pero no un singular como lo singular del mundo, del que en un momento brotan singulares en interminable serie, sino un singular en el espacio vacío y sin límites; o sea, un singular que nada sabe de otros singulares junto a él, que nada sabe en general de un junto a él porque está por doquier,; un singular no como acto, ni como acontecimiento, sino como perpetua esencia.

Este ser propio del hombre es, pues, cosa distinta de la individualidad que él mismo toma, en cuanto fenómeno singular, dentro del mundo. No se trata de una individualidad que se separe de otras individualidades; no es una parte, mientras que el individuo confiesa, justamente al aferrarse a su indivisibilidad, que él mismo es una parte. Este ser propio del hombre no es de suyo infinito, sino que es en lo infinito. Es singular y, sin embargo, lo es todo. A su alrededor hay el infinito silencio del No-nada humano. El es el sonido que suena en este silencio; algo finito y, sin embargo, ilimitado.

ABOUT man also we know nothing. And this nothing, too, is only a beginning, and even the beginning of a beginning. In him, too, the original-words awaken, the Yes that creates, the No that generates, and the And that articulates. And here, too, the Yes creates the true being, the “essence,” in the infinite not-nothing.

What is this true being of man? The being of God was simply being, being beyond knowledge. The being of the world was in knowledge, a known being, a universal being. But facing God and the world, what is the essence of man? Goethe teaches us: “What distinguishes the gods from men? It is that many waves go past the gods—us, the wave raises, the wave swallows, and we sink.” And Ecclesiastes teaches us: “A generation goes, a generation comes, but the earth remains eternal.” The ephemeral, which is foreign to God and the gods, and which for the world is the bewildering experience of its own force always and at all times renewed, is therefore for man the abiding atmosphere which envelops him, which he inhales and exhales—with every breath of his breathing. Man is ephemeral, being ephemeral is his essence, as it is God’s essence to be immortal and unconditional, and it is the world’s essence to be universal and necessary. God’s being is being in the unconditional, the world’s being is being in the universal, man’s being is: being in the particular. Knowledge is not under him as it is for God, it is not around him and in him as it is for the world, but above him; he is not beyond the universal validity and necessity of knowledge, but rather he is in this world; he is not when knowledge comes to a stop, but before it  begins; and it is only because he is before knowledge that it happens that he still is after and that he shouts his victorious cry: “I am still here” to all knowledge, however completely it may imagine that it has put him into the vessels of its universal validity and its necessity. His essence is precisely that he does not let himself be put into a bottle, that he is always “still there,” that, in his particularity, he always says what he thinks of the universal’s pretensions to domination, that his own particularity is not an event for him, as the world probably would willingly concede to him, but precisely a thing that goes without saying—his essence. His first word, his original Yes, affirms his own being. In the boundless No of his nothing, this affirmation founds his particularity, his attribute as essence. A singular, then, but not a singular like the singular of the world which, at certain moments, explodes in a continuous series of singulars, but a singular in boundless space, a singular, then, which knows nothing of other singulars beside it, which moreover knows nothing at all of a “beside it,” because it is “everywhere,” a singular not as act, not as event, but as perpetual essence.

This attribute of man is therefore something other than the individuality he assumes as a singular phenomenon inside the world. This is not an individuality that secedes from other individualities, it is not a part—and even though he prides himself in his indivisibility, he recognizes that he is himself a part. His own nature is certainly not itself infinite, but “in” infinity; it is a singular reality and yet it is everything. Around it lies the infinite silence of the human not-nothing; it itself is the sound that resounds into this silence, a finite and yet unlimited entity.
