Na imensa multiplicidade do acontecer no interior de um organismo, a parte que se nos torna consciente é um mero cantinho: e o bocadinho de “virtude”, a “abnegação” e ficções semelhantes são desmentidas, de maneira perfeitamente radical, pelo restante total do acontecer. Fazemos bem em estudar nosso organismo em sua perfeita imoralidade...

As funções animais são, por princípio, milhões de vezes mais importantes do que todos os belos estados e alturas da consciência: estes últimos são um excedente à medida que não precisam ser instrumentos daquelas funções animais.

Toda a vida consciente, o espírito junto com a alma, junto com o coração, junto com a bondade, junto com a virtude: isso trabalha a serviço de quê? No aperfeiçoamento maior possível dos meios (de nutrição, de incremento) das funções animais fundamentais: antes de tudo, no incremento da vida.

É indizivelmente mais importante isso que se chamou de “corpo” e “carne”: o resto é um pequeno acessório. A tarefa de continuar a tecer toda a cadeia da vida, de tal maneira que o fio se torne sempre mais poderoso — essa é a tarefa. Mas, então, olhe-se como coração, alma, virtude, espírito conjuram-se formalmente para inverter essa tarefa principal: como se eles fossem as metas... A degeneração da vida é essencialmente condicionada pela extraordinária capacidade deturpadora da consciência: os instintos a mantêm nas rédeas o menos possível e, por isso, ela se engana pelo mais longo tempo possível e o mais fundamentalmente.

Usar sentimentos agradáveis ou desagradáveis dessa consciência para medir se a existência tem valor: poder-se-ia imaginar um mais louco delírio da vaidade? (340) Ela, a consciência, é apenas um meio: e sentimentos agradáveis e desagradáveis também são somente meios! — Com que se mede objetivamente o valor? Somente com a quantidade de poder incrementado e organizado.

In the tremendous multiplicity of events within an organism, the part which becomes conscious to us is a mere means: and the little bit of “virtue,” “selflessness,” and similar fictions are refuted radically by the total balance of events. We should study our organism in all its immorality—

The animal functions are, as a matter of principle, a million times more important than all our beautiful moods and heights of consciousness: the latter are a surplus, except when they have to serve as tools of those animal functions. The entire conscious life, the spirit along with the soul, the heart, goodness, and virtue—in whose service do they labor? In the service of the greatest possible perfection of the means (means of nourishment, means of enhancement) of the basic animal functions: above all, the enhancement of life.

What one used to call “body” and “flesh” is of such unspeakably greater importance: the remainder is a small accessory. The task of spinning on the chain of life, and in such a way that the thread grows ever more powerful—that is the task.

But consider how heart, soul, virtue, spirit practically conspire together to subvert this systematic task—as if they were the end in view!— The degeneration of life is conditioned essentially by the extraordinary proneness to error of consciousness: it is held in check by instinct the least of all and therefore blunders the longest and the most thoroughly.

To measure whether existence has value according to the pleasant or unpleasant feelings aroused in this consciousness: can one think of a madder extravagance of vanity? For it is only a means—and pleasant or unpleasant feelings are also only means!

What is the objective measure of value? Solely the quantum of enhanced and organized power.

In der ungeheuren Vielheit des Geschehens innerhalb eines Organismus ist der uns bewusst werdende Theil ein blosses Mittel: und das Bisschen „Tugend“, „Selbstlosigkeit“ und ähnliche Fiktionen werden auf eine vollkommen radikale Weise vom ubrigen Gesammtgeschehen aus Lügen gestraft. Wir thun gut, unseren Organismus in seiner vollkommenen Unmoralität zu studiren . . .

Die animalischen Funktionen sind ja principiell millionenfach wichtiger als alle schönen Zustände und Bewusstseins-Höhen: letztere sind ein Überschuss, soweit sie nicht Werkzeuge sein müssen für jene animalischen Funktionen. Das ganze bewusste Leben, der Geist sammt der Seele, sammt dem Herzen, sammt der Güte, sammt der Tugend: in wessen Dienst arbeitet es denn? In dem möglichster Vervollkommnung der Mittel (Ernährungs-, Steigerungsmittel der animalischen Grundfunktionen: vor Allem der Lebenssteigerung.

Es liegt so unsäglich viel mehr an Dem, was man „Leib“ und „Fleisch“ nannte: der Rest ist ein kleines Zubehör. Die Aufgabe, die ganze Kette des Lebens fortzuspinnen, (137) und so, dass der Faden immer mächtiger wird — das ist die Aufgabe.

Aber nun sehe man, wie Herz, Seele, Tugend, Geist förmlich sich verschwören, diese principielle Aufgabe zu verkehren wie als ob sie die Ziele wären! . . . Die Entartung des Lebens ist wesentlich bedingt durch die ausserordentliche Irrthumsfähigkeit des Bewusstseins: es wird am wenigsten durch Instinkte in Zaum gehalten und vergreift sich deshalb am längsten und gründlichsten.

Nach den angenehmen und unangenehmen Gefühlen dieses Bewusstseins abmessen, ob das Dasein Werth hat: kann man sich eine tollere Ausschweifung der Eitelkeit denken? Es ist ja nur ein Mittel. — und angenehme oder unangenehme Gefühle sind ja auch nur Mittel!

Woran misst sich objektiv der Werth? Allein an dem Quantum gesteigerter und organisirter Macht . . .
