“Ainda há em algumas partes povos e rebanhos; mas não entre nós, meus irmãos; entre nós há Estados.

Estado? Que é isso? Vamos! Abri os ouvidos, porque eu vos vou falar da morte dos povos.

Estado chama-se o mais frio dos monstros frios. É frio também quando mente com aquela mentira rasteira que sai de sua boca: ‘Eu, o Estado, sou o Povo’.

Mentira! Criadores foram os construtores de povos, os que suspenderam sobre eles uma fé e um amor; serviram assim à vida.

Destruidores foram os que puseram armadilhas para o grande número, e a isso chamam o Estado; suspendem sobre suas cabeças uma espada e cem apetites.

Onde ainda há povo, não se compreende o Estado, e é detestado com o mau olhar, como uma transgressão dos costumes e das leis.

Eu vos dou este sinal; cada povo fala uma língua particular sobre o bem e o mal, que o vizinho não compreende. Inventa para si uma língua sobre os costumes e as leis.

Mas o Estado sabe mentir em todas as línguas do bem e do mal, e em tudo o que diz, mente; e tudo quanto tem, foi roubado.

Nele tudo é falso; morde com falsos dentes, esse mordedor. Até suas entranhas são falsas.

A confusão das línguas do bem e do mal, eis o sinal que vos dou; tal é o sinal do Estado. Na verdade, é um sintoma da vontade de morrer. Na verdade, é um convite aos pregadores da morte.

Vêm ao mundo homens em demasia; para os supérfluos inventou-se o Estado!

Vede como ele atrai os supérfluos! Como os engole, como os masca, e remasca!

‘Na terra, nada há maior do que eu; eu sou o dedo soberano de Deus’, assim ruge o monstro. E não são somente os que têm orelhas longas e vista curta os que caem de joelhos!

Também em vós, grandes almas, ele murmura suas sombrias mentiras! Ah! Ele adivinha os corações ricos que gostam de ser pródigos.

Sim; adivinha a vós também, vencedores do antigo Deus. Vós vos rendestes no combate, e agora a vossa lassidão pôs-se a serviço do novo ídolo!

Ele quisera cercar-se de heróis e de homens de respeito, esse novo ídolo. Esse frio monstro gosta de esquentar-se ao sol da pura consciência.

Ele vos dará tudo se o adorardes, o novo ídolo; assim compra o brilho de vossa virtude e o altivo olhar de vossos olhos! Quer servir-se de vós como de um manjar para os supérfluos.

Sim; inventou com isso uma artimanha infernal, um corcel da morte, ajaezado com o adorno deslumbrante das honras divinas.

Sim; inventou para o grande número uma forma de morte que se glorifica de ser vida; na verdade, foi o melhor serviço prestado aos pregadores da morte.

Estado, sei, é onde todos bebem veneno, bons e maus; Estado, onde todos se perdem a si mesmos, bons e maus; Estado, onde o lento suicídio de todos chama-se ‘a vida’.

Vede, pois, esses supérfluos! Roubam as obras dos inventores e os tesouros dos sábios; civilização chamam ao seu latrocínio, e tudo se lhes toma enfermidade e revés.

Vede-me, pois, esses supérfluos! Estão sempre enfermos; vomitam a sua bílis, e chamam a isso periódicos. Entredevoram-se, e não conseguem digerir.

Vede-me, pois, esses supérfluos! Adquirem riquezas, e se tornam mais pobres. Querem o poder, esses impotentes, sobretudo o palanquim do dever: muito dinheiro!

Vede como trepam esses símios ágeis! Trepam uns sobre os outros, e arrastam-se assim uns aos outros ao lodo e ao abismo.

Todos querem aproximar-se do trono: é a sua loucura – como se a felicidade estivesse no trono! – Frequentemente é o lodo o que está no trono e frequentemente também o trono está no lodo.

Loucos são para mim todos eles, e símios trepadores e excitados. Seu ídolo, esse frio monstro, fede; todos eles fedem também, esses idólatras.

Quereis afogar-vos na exalação de suas goelas e de seus apetites, meus irmãos? Quebrai as vidraças antes, e saltai para o ar livre!

Fugi desse mau cheiro! Evitai cair na idolatria desses supérfluos.

Fugi desse mau cheiro! Evitai o fumo desses sacrifícios humanos!

Ainda agora é livre o mundo para as almas grandes. Para os que vivem solitários, ou entre dois, ainda há muitos lugares vagos, onde se aspira o odor dos mares silenciosos.

Ainda têm aberta uma vida livre as almas grandes. Na verdade, quem pouco possui, tanto menos é possuído. Bendita seja a modesta pobreza!

Ali, onde acaba o Estado, começa o homem que não é supérfluo; ali começa o canto dos que são necessários, a melodia única e insubstituível.

Ali, onde acaba o Estado... olhai, meus irmãos! Não vedes o arco-íris e a ponte do Além-Homem?”

IRGENDWO gibt es noch Völker und Herden, doch nicht bei uns, meine Brüder: da gibt es Staaten.

Somewhere there are still peoples and herds, but not with us, my brethren: here there are states.

Staat? Was ist das? Wohlan! Jetzt tut mir die Ohren auf, denn jetzt sage ich euch mein Wort vom Tode der Völker.

A state? What is that? Well! open now your ears unto me, for now will I say unto you my word concerning the death of peoples.

Staat heißt das kälteste aller kalten Ungeheuer.

A state, is called the coldest of all cold monsters.

Kalt lügt es auch; und diese Lüge kriecht aus seinem Munde: »Ich, der Staat, bin das Volk.«

Coldly lieth it also; and this lie creepeth from its mouth: “I, the state, am the people.”

Lüge ist’s! Schaffende waren es, die schufen die Völker und hängten einen Glauben und eine Liebe über sie hin: also dienten sie dem Leben.

It is a lie! Creators were they who created peoples, and hung a faith and a love over them: thus they served life.

Vernichter sind es, die stellen Fallen auf für viele und heißen sie Staat: sie hängen ein Schwert und hundert Begierden über sie hin.

Destroyers, are they who lay snares for many, and call it the state: they hang a sword and a hundred cravings over them.

Wo es noch Volk gibt, da versteht es den Staat nicht und haßt ihn als bösen Blick und Sünde an Sitten und Rechten.

Where there is still a people, there the state is not understood, but hated as the evil eye, and as sin against laws and customs.

Dieses Zeichen gebe ich euch: jedes Volk spricht seine Zunge des Guten und Bösen: die versteht der Nachbar nicht.

This sign I give unto you: every people speaketh its language of good and evil: this its neighbour understandeth not.

Seine Sprache erfand es sich in Sitten und Rechten.

Its language hath it devised for itself in laws and customs.

Aber der Staat lügt in allen Zungen der Guten und Bösen; und was er auch redet, er lügt – und was er auch hat, gestohlen hat er’s.

But the state lieth in all languages of good and evil; and whatever it saith it lieth; and whatever it hath it hath stolen.

Falsch ist alles an ihm; mit gestohlenen Zähnen beißt er, der Bissige. Falsch sind selbst seine Eingeweide.

False is everything in it; with stolen teeth it biteth, the biting one. False are even its bowels.

Sprachverwirrung des Guten und Bösen: dieses Zeichen gebe ich euch als Zeichen des Staates.

Confusion of language of good and evil; this sign I give unto you as the sign of the state.

Wahrlich, den Willen zum Tode deutet dieses Zeichen! Wahrlich, es winkt den Predigern des Todes!

Verily, the will to death, indicateth this sign! Verily, it beckoneth unto the preachers of death!

Viel zu viele werden geboren: für die Überflüssigen ward der Staat erfunden!

Many too many are born: for the superfluous ones was the state devised!

Seht mir doch, wie er sie an sich lockt, die Viel-zu-Vielen! Wie er sie schlingt und kaut und wiederkäut!

See just how it enticeth them to it, the many-too-many! How it swalloweth and cheweth and recheweth them!

»Auf der Erde ist nichts Größeres als ich: der ordnende Finger bin ich Gottes« – also brüllt das Untier.

“On earth there is nothing greater than I: it is I who am the regulating finger of God” — thus roareth the monster.

Und nicht nur Langgeohrte und Kurzgeäugte sinken auf die Knie!

And not only the long-eared and short-sighted fall upon their knees!

Ach, auch in euch, ihr großen Seelen, raunt er seine düsteren Lügen! Ach, er errät die reichen Herzen, die gerne sich verschwenden!

Ah! even in your ears, ye great souls, it whispereth its gloomy lies! Ah! it findeth out the rich hearts which willingly lavish themselves!

Ja, auch euch errät er, ihr Besieger des alten Gottes! Müde wurdet ihr im Kampfe, und nun dient eure Müdigkeit noch dem neuen Götzen!

Yea, it findeth you out too, ye conquerors of the old God! Weary ye became of the conflict, and now your weariness serveth the new idol!

Helden und Ehrenhafte möchte er um sich aufstellen, der neue Götze!

Heroes and honourable ones, it would fain set up around it, the new idol!

Gerne sonnt er sich im Sonnenschein guter Gewissen – das kalte Untier!

Gladly it basketh in the sunshine of good consciences,— the cold monster!

Alles will er euch geben, wenn ihr ihn anbetet, der neue Götze:

Everything will it give YOU, if YE worship it, the new idol:

also kauft er sich den Glanz eurer Tugenden und den Blick eurer stolzen Augen.

thus it purchaseth the lustre of your virtue, and the glance of your proud eyes.

Ködern will er mit euch die Viel-zu Vielen!

It seeketh to allure by means of you, the many-too-many!

Ja, ein Höllenkunststück ward da erfunden, ein Pferd des Todes, klirrend im Putz göttlicher Ehren!

Yea, a hellish artifice hath here been devised, a death-horse jingling with the trappings of divine honours!

Ja, ein Sterben für viele ward da erfunden, das sich selber als Leben preist: wahrlich, ein Herzensdienst allen Predigern des Todes!

Yea, a dying for many hath here been devised, which glorifieth itself as life: verily, a hearty service unto all preachers of death!

Staat nenne ich’s, wo alle Gifttrinker sind, Gute und Schlimme: Staat, wo alle sich selber verlieren, Gute und Schlimme:

The state, I call it, where all are poison-drinkers, the good and the bad: the state, where all lose themselves, the good and the bad:

Staat, wo der langsame Selbstmord aller – »das Leben« heißt.

the state, where the slow suicide of all — is called “life.”

Seht mir doch diese Überflüssigen! Sie stehlen sich die Werke der Erfinder und die Schätze der Weisen:

Just see these superfluous ones! They steal the works of the inventors and the treasures of the wise.

Bildung nennen sie ihren Diebstahl – und alles wird ihnen zu Krankheit und Ungemach!

Culture, they call their theft — and everything becometh sickness and trouble unto them!

Seht mir doch diese Überflüssigen! Krank sind sie immer, sie erbrechen ihre Galle und nennen es Zeitung.

Just see these superfluous ones! Sick are they always; they vomit their bile and call it a newspaper.

Sie verschlingen einander und können sich nicht einmal verdauen.

They devour one another, and cannot even digest themselves.

Seht mir doch diese Überflüssigen! Reichtümer erwerben sie und werden ärmer damit.

Just see these superfluous ones! Wealth they acquire and become poorer thereby.

Macht wollen sie und zuerst das Brecheisen der Macht, viel Geld – diese Unvermögenden!

Power they seek for, and above all, the lever of power, much money — these impotent ones!

Seht sie klettern, diese geschwinden Affen! Sie klettern übereinander hinweg und zerren sich also in den Schlamm und die Tiefe.

See them clamber, these nimble apes! They clamber over one another, and thus scuffle into the mud and the abyss.

Hin zum Throne wollen sie alle: ihr Wahnsinn ist es – als ob das Glück auf dem Throne säße!

Towards the throne they all strive: it is their madness — as if happiness sat on the throne!

Oft sitzt der Schlamm auf dem Thron -und oft auch der Thron auf dem Schlamme.

Ofttimes sitteth filth on the throne. — and ofttimes also the throne on filth.

Wahnsinnige sind sie mir alle und kletternde Affen und Überheiße.

Madmen they all seem to me, and clambering apes, and too eager.

Übel riecht mir ihr Götze, das kalte Untier: übel riechen sie mir alle zusammen, diese Götzendiener.

Badly smelleth their idol to me, the cold monster: badly they all smell to me, these idolaters.

Meine Brüder, wollt ihr denn ersticken im Dunste ihrer Mäuler und Begierden? Lieber zerbrecht doch die Fenster und springt ins Freie!

My brethren, will ye suffocate in the fumes of their maws and appetites! Better break the windows and jump into the open air!

Geht doch dem schlechten Geruche aus dem Wege! Geht fort von der Götzendienerei der Überflüssigen!

Do go out of the way of the bad odour! Withdraw from the idolatry of the superfluous!

Do go out of the way of the bad odour! Withdraw from the steam of these human sacrifices!

Frei steht großen Seelen auch jetzt noch die Erde.

Open still remaineth the earth for great souls.

Leer sind noch viele Sitze für Einsame und Zweisame, um die der Geruch stiller Meere weht.

Empty are still many sites for lone ones and twain ones, around which floateth the odour of tranquil seas.

Frei steht noch großen Seelen ein freies Leben. Wahrlich, wer wenig besitzt, wird um so weniger besessen: gelobt sei die kleine Armut!

Open still remaineth a free life for great souls. Verily, he who possesseth little is so much the less possessed: blessed be moderate poverty!

Dort, wo der Staat aufhört, da beginnt erst der Mensch, der nicht überflüssig ist:

There, where the state ceaseth — there only commenceth the man who is not superfluous:

da beginnt das Lied des Notwendigen, die einmalige und unersetzliche Weise.

there commenceth the song of the necessary ones, the single and irreplaceable melody.

Dort, wo der Staat aufhört – so seht mir doch hin, meine Brüder!

There, where the state CEASETH — pray look thither, my brethren!

Seht ihr ihn nicht, den Regenbogen und die Brücken des Übermenschen? –
