  * levando-nos a tentar dizer o que não pode ser dito (PI 119)

  * enredando-nos em nossas próprias regras (PI 125)

  * conflitos entre diferentes usos de palavras (PI 26)

  * criando completas ilusões (PI 100-10)

  * dando incorretos relatos do uso das palavras (PI 345)

  * inventando um mito de sentido (PI 374)

  * enumerando algo inútil como proposição (PI 520)

Esses tipos de erros que somos “tentados” a cometer são a “matéria-prima da filosofia” (PI 254), que a filosofia tenta esclarecer por obter uma visão clara do que está errado.

Às vezes, temos a ver com mais do que tentações. Figuras, palavras e gramática "se impõem a nós" (PI 397, 178, 304); figuras “mantêm-nos em cativeiro” (PI 115), ou somos “incapazes de desviar os olhos delas” (PI 352) ou “temos uma vontade de entender mal” (PI 109). Há um "fascínio" em analogias enganosas (BB 26-7) e um "encantamento" a que devemos resistir (PI 109) ·

O paradoxo da linguagem é que, por um lado, a gramática representa a inteligência normal e média dos seres humanos, pois foi culturalmente fundada nos padrões a priori de uso da linguagem, mas, por outro lado, estamos constantemente sendo enganados, equivocados e confusos pela incompreensão desse funcionamento normal. A linguagem não pode ser "explicada" ou "justificada". Ele não precisa ser "fundamentado". Ele nem precisa ser "aplicado"; é aplicável por sua própria natureza. Em suas possibilidades, é a priori, mas não imutável e nem além de todos os acontecimentos, nem independente da história e dos atos humanos.

We might say that between the two stages of Wittgenstein’s philosophy essence and description change places. Whereas in the Tractatus he is after the essence of description (which is also the essence of language and the world), in the Philosophical Investigations he is after the description of essence, where essence is the phenomenon of language seen in the aspect of possibilities for meaning and sense. And whereas the essence of description is logic with its ontology, the description of essence is the description of ordinary grammar.[]

When G. E. Moore objected that Wittgenstein was using the word grammar in a special way, Wittgenstein replied emphatically that this was not so and that when he spoke of “philosophical grammar,” he meant by “grammar” the same thing as when the word was used in Grammar School (that name and that kind of instruction).

Grammar may be called the “essence of the world” in the new sense of “essence,” and philosophy is the “custodian of grammar” (PR 85). This means that “grammar is the shadow of possibility cast by language on phenomena” (PG 329). It tells us what kinds of things things are (PR 74) and gives language the “necessary degrees of freedom.” Instead of being the abstract heart of language, grammar is an aspect of language, the aspect that concerns the philosopher because it deals with the possibilities of language.

Most important are two points: that grammar consists of conventions (PG 138) and thus has a cultural context, and that grammar is autonomous and not beholden to any other reality.

Grammar is not accountable to any reality. It is grammatical rules that determine meaning (constitute it) and so they themselves are not answerable to any meaning and to that extent are arbitrary. (PG 184)

Because grammar is autonomous, like arithmetic, which is the “grammar of numbers” (PR 23), it guarantees its own applicability.

These are, in a way, the deep features of grammar, or the particular aspects of language that concern philosophers. But language also plays a vast variety of tricks on us, which generate our philosophical problems and which can be cleared up only by getting a clear view of the uses of our words (i.e., of the grammar). At every turn we encounter tricks, difficulties, and confusions from misunderstanding this deeper grammar.

How does language work its power over us to mislead us? There is a long list of ways in which it tempts us to misunderstand it. Wittgenstein mentions, for example, these:

—suggesting misleading pictures (PI 140, 305, 397; BB 43, 115)

—surface similarities concealing deeper differences (PI 109, 132, 187)

—suggested analogies that can’t be carried out (BB 28, 49)

—leading us to try to say what cannot be said (PI 119)

—entangling us in our own rules (PI 125)

—conflicts between different uses of words (PI 26)

—creating out-and-out illusions (PI 100-10)

—giving incorrect accounts of uses of words (PI 345)

—inventing a myth of meaning (PI 374)

—counting some useless thing as a proposition (PI 520)

These kinds of mistakes that we are “tempted” to make are the “raw material of philosophy” (PI 254), what philosophy attempts to clear up by gaining a clear view of what goes wrong.

Sometimes we have to do with more than temptations. Pictures, words and grammar “force themselves on us” (PI 397, 178, 304); pictures “hold us captive” (PI 115), or we are “unable to turn our eyes away from them” (PI 352) or we “have an urge to misunderstand” (PI 109). There is a “fascination” in misleading analogies (BB 26-7) and a “bewitchment” we have to resist (PI 109)·

The paradox of language is that, on the one hand, grammar represents the normal, average intelligence of human beings as this has been culturally funded in the a priori patterns of usage of language, but, on the other hand, we are constantly being misled, deceived and confused by misunderstanding these normal workings. Language cannot be “explained” or “justified.” It doesn’t need to be “grounded.” It doesn’t even need to be “applied”; it is applicable by its very nature. In its possibilities it is a priori, but not unchangeable and not beyond all happenings, nor independent of human history and doings.

Grammatical remarks, as the philosopher advances them, we should understand clearly, do not report facts of usage (this belongs to anthropology or linguistics), but possibilities of usage, which are the binding norms of a language, conventional, historical and changing, but nevertheless necessary and presupposed. In them, as it were in a common currency, we see the meanings of a culture. But never all at once, for they come to our attention only when normal functionings go askew. Then we find ourselves in the grip of pathologies of language, which lay hold on us as powerfully as any mental or physical disorder.
