Em Aristóteles, êthos torna-se parte da linguagem terminológica da poética: os “caracteres” (êthê), que nos permitem descrever os caracteres em ação, são um dos seis elementos da tragédia, juntamente com a história, mythos ; expressão, lexis ; pensamento, dianoia ; espetáculo, opsis ; e música, melopoia  (Poética 6.1450a5-10). Onde Aristóteles é particularmente inovador, no entanto, como o título de sua Ética (en tois Êthikois), Politics 4.1295a36ff.), por si só indica, é em usando o adjetivo êthikon  para marcar uma área totalmente separada da filosofia. Essa partição, que se tornou parte aceita dos programas de filosofia, foi institucionalizada na descrição estoica das partes da filosofia (ver Diógenes Laertius, Proemium 18). Como forma de defini-lo, Aristóteles optou por reinterpretar os dois termos e fazer de êthos (caráter) uma consequência do ethos (hábito):

Virtude ética  por seu lado (isto é, distinto de aretê dianoêtikê, excelência de pensamento, virtude intelectual) surge como efeito do hábito , que é como o nome é formado, como uma ligeira variação de ethos. É claro disso que nenhuma de nossas virtudes éticas surge  dentro de nós por natureza. (Ética a Nicômaco 2.1, 1103a17-19; cf. Ética a Eudemo 1220a39-b3) As apostas aqui são muito altas: para Aristóteles, é questão de determinar com a maior precisão possível o lugar da natureza na ética: “Nem por natureza, então, nem contrárias à natureza surgem virtudes em nós; pelo contrário, somos adaptados pela natureza para recebê-los e aperfeiçoados pelo hábito ”(Ética a Nicômaco 2.1, 1103a23–26). A interação entre êthos e ethos ancora a virtude na prática, tanto pelos hábitos políticos que são contraídos por causa de uma boa constituição quanto pelo exercício individual da virtude; em outras palavras, a virtude é uma technê , um “know-how”:

As virtudes, obtemos por primeiro exercita-las, como também acontece no caso das outras artes (technai). Esse texto é frequentemente comparado ao Leis de Platão: seu ateniense, ao fazer seu programa de educação, já une êthos e ethos, caráter e hábito, mas ao estipular que é durante a infância e até no ventre da mãe que “mais do que em qualquer outro momento, o caractere é enraizado no hábito ; expression, lexis ; thought, dianoia ; spectacle, opsis ; and song, melopoia  ( Poetics 6.1450a5–10 ). It is above all part of the terminology of rhetoric: the “character” ( ethos ) of the orator, along with the passion ( pathos  ) of the listener and the logos  itself in its persuasiveness, constitute the three “technical proofs,” that is, those which depend on art itself, unlike those, like testimonial accounts, which have an external origin ( Rhetoric 1.2, 1356a ): the good orator indeed not only should study characters ( theôrêsai ta êthê , 1356a22 ) as part of his training, as Plato’s Phaedrus had already suggested, so as to adapt his speech to his audience, but also should himself display a character that has been appropriately adapted, and that corresponds to the particular character of the political regime in which he is speaking ( “We should ourselves possess the character particular to each constitution ,” Rhetoric 1366a12 ), so as to inspire confidence ( pistis  ) and to induce persuasion ( pistis , again ). This explains, then, the connection between rhetoric and “ethics” ( proofs—still pistis —come, says Aristotle, “by means of speech that is not only demonstrative, but ‘ethical’ ,” Rhetoric 1366a9ff. ), as well as the fact that political science, which determines what constitutes the properly human good, can be an architectonic for both rhetoric and ethics ( Nicomachean Ethics 1.1, 1094a26–b7 ).

Where Aristotle is particularly innovative, however, as the title of his Ethics ( en tois Êthikois , Politics 4.1295a36ff. ) by itself indicates, is in using the adjective êthikon  to mark out an entirely separate area of philosophy. This partition, which has become an accepted part of philosophy programs, was institutionalized in the Stoic description of the parts of philosophy ( see Diogenes Laertius, Proemium 18 ). As a way of defining it, Aristotle chose to reinterpret the two terms, and to make êthos ( character ) a consequence of ethos ( habit ):

Ethical virtue  for its part (that is, as distinct from aretê dianoêtikê , excellence of thought, intellectual virtue) arises as an effect of habit , which is how its name is formed, as a slight variation of ethos . It is plain from this that none of our ethical virtues arises  within us by nature. ( Nicomachean Ethics 2.1, 1103a17–19; cf. Eudemian Ethics 1220a39–b3 ) The stakes here are very high: for Aristotle, it is question of determining as accurately as possible the place of nature in ethics: “Neither by nature, then, nor contrary to nature do virtues arise in us; rather we are adapted by nature to receive them, and are made perfect by habit” ( Nicomachean Ethics 2.1, 1103a23–26 ). The interplay between êthos and ethos anchors virtue in practice, both through the political habits that are contracted because of a good constitution, and through individual exercise of virtue; in other words, virtue is a technê , a “know-how”:

The virtues we get by first exercising them, as also happens in the case of the other arts ( technai ). For the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them, for example, men become builders by building and lyre-players by playing the lyre. ( Ibid., 1103a31–34 )

This text is often compared to the one in Plato’s Laws : his Athenian, in making his program of education, already joins together êthos and ethos , character and habit, but in stipulating that it is during infancy, and even in the mother’s womb, that “more than at any other time the character is engrained by habit ” ( Laws 7.792e; cf., for example, Nicomachean Ethics , trans. Tricot, 87 n. 3 ). This overlooks the fact that what is at stake is deliberately reversed: where Plato comforts the naturalist by arguing that habit is innate, Aristotle neutralizes what is given to us naturally by arguing for a responsible practice. Most of the difficulties and even confusions between customs and morals, between morals and ethics, stem from this initial chiasmus, which anchors ethics in habit more than in character, in culture and practice more than in nature. The proof of this is that most philosophers who have attempted to define the terms in their own languages, like Cicero or G.W.F. Hegel, have tried to find a set of problematics equivalent to the Greek, thus placing the task of translation at the heart of their reflection. (DU, p. 692-693)
