Eros é, portanto, a norma básica para todos os valores — dos valores da vida aos valores ideais mais elevados; não se pode restringi-lo, então, ao “amor à vida” (Vitalliebe) ou ao amor sexual ou ao amor “intelectual”; pois, em todos os casos, estaria excluído o conceito básico de participação do núcleo (des Kerns) de uma pessoa finita no Ser essencial. Assim como todos os seres... estão em relação inalterável com Deus, e essas relações são constitutivas — isto é, uma base de ser para eles — o mesmo vale para seus relacionamentos uns com os outros. Pois essas relações secundárias são meras consequências dessa relação primária e são mediadas por ela, assim como a relação dos pontos-periferia uns com os outros [é mediada] pela relação destes com seu centro comum. O amor fraterno e o amor ao próximo, portanto... como diz a Sagrada Escritura, fundamenta-se no amor a Deus, assim como o ódio ao próximo se fundamenta no ódio a Deus. Pois só tenho poder para me unir verdadeiramente a outra pessoa se primeiro me unir imediatamente a Deus e, da mesma maneira, só posso romper completamente com meu próximo se me afastar ou me afastar de Deus. (5.230)

Não é que você conheça, ame e precise de coisas diferentes dentro e fora de Deus — isto é, na eternidade e no tempo — mas sim que você conhece, ama e precisa das mesmas coisas de uma maneira diferente. Se você deixa criaturas onde estão divididas, fragmentadas, incompletas e em tensão, você as pega e as encontra novamente onde estão unidas e perfeitas (em Deus). É, portanto, uma ideia falsa e enganosa, sustentada por vários ascetas, dizer que amar a Deus, o Criador, contradiz o amor às criaturas, como se devêssemos ver Deus simplesmente como um objeto ao lado de criaturas como outros objetos, etc. Mas a religião nos ordena expressamente a amar as criaturas no Criador, não à parte dele ou mesmo contra ele. (5.263; veja também 2.180, 181)

Admite-se geralmente que o amor não busca os seus e que não se ama uma pessoa em quem não se confia mais do que se pode vê-la. Mas houve e há escritores que fazem uma exceção a isso no caso do amor de Deus e da fé nele, sustentando seriamente que se deve ser obrigado a confiar e acreditar em Deus apenas na medida em que se pode vê-lo ou observá-lo em sua atividade. Kant, por exemplo, não raciocina muito melhor sobre o amor do que um cego sobre a cor quando (seguindo a definição de Spinoza: Ideo bonum quia appetimus) define o amor como a inclinação que temos para o que nos traz vantagem.... O amor é amor apenas porque não é limitado pela necessidade, desejo ou natureza. (Não é, portanto, antinatural, no entanto). Pode-se ver isso na consagração do desejo sexual (que é por si só o zênite do egoísmo apaixonado, portanto, completo desamor) através do amor no casamento. (2.178-79)

A nota de Baader sobre este texto diz: “O ideal na cópula animal (o chamado amor) é desdobrar a raça eterna no declínio do indivíduo; mas o ideal do amor humano é desdobrar a raça eterna na unicidade da pessoa, de modo que é precisamente esta pessoa que é posta de acordo com sua unicidade eterna (como membro do todo). Este elemento único, portanto, representa tudo aos olhos de seu amante. Aqui temos um caso do Todo (Deus) brilhando na singularidade transfigurada da pessoa” (2.179 ss. 3).

O mesmo filósofo alemão de quem falamos  deduziu até o amor de uma convicção de vantagem líquida que a pessoa amada nos proporciona ou nos leva a esperar que o faça. Assim como ele estava infectado com a peculiar idiossincrasia de ser incapaz de tolerar qualquer oração pública (social), ele declarou ex cathedra que a oração é puro fetichismo. Seu Deus (a lei surda e muda) não era menos impessoal e desumano que o Deus de Spinoza. Devemos a ele agradecer particularmente o purismo da nova moral, que afastou toda relação pessoal do homem com Deus e, consequentemente, todo sentimento dessa moral. (5.282)

Baader acreditava estar alcançando uma profunda reviravolta no idealismo alemão — semelhante a Agostinho no início do idealismo medieval — e, de fato, por esta razão: que a forma fundamental de nossa participação no mundo-fundo último é regida pelo conteúdo essencial deste último. Se for, por exemplo, um Dever Categórico — como no caso de Kant e Fichte — então nossa participação máxima no ser último só pode, na natureza do caso, ser compartilhar desse Dever (Mit-sollen). Se for Pensamento primordial – então compartilhar isso (Mit-denken). Mas se é amor primordial – então compartilhar no amor (Mit-lieben). E esse amor é então – mesmo que não se permita uma primazia do amor – ontológica e noeticamente um poder que independe do ato racional de conhecer. Aquele que é tocado por Eros não tem dúvida de que está mais próximo do mistério do mundo quando está nesse estado do que em qualquer outro estado de exaltação. [J. Sauter]

Quanto mais intenso o sentimento de união entre ação e reação (quanto mais para dentro é a união), mais para dentro é o vínculo que liga o produto ao produtor. Quanto mais unidos estão os fatores de produção, mais intenso é seu sentimento (afeto) e mais próxima é sua união com o produto. Também no amor de Deus pelo homem há união mais íntima com a mais alta distinção. Mas a distinção, neste caso, tem a ver com a essência, enquanto a união tem a ver com a ação. (12.186)

Eros is, therefore, the basic norm for all values — from life values to the highest ideal values; one may not restrict it, then, to “love of life” (Vitalliebe) or to sexual love or to “intellectual” love; for, in every case, the basic concept of participation of the nucleus (des Kerns) of a finite person in the essential Being would be excluded. Just as all beings ... stand in unalterable relationship to God, and these relationships are constitutive — i.e., a ground of being for them — the same thing holds for their relationships with one another. For these secondary relationships are merely consequences of that primary relationship and are mediated through it, just as the relationship of periphery-points to one another  through the relationship of the latter to their common center. Brotherly love and love of neighbor, is, therefore ... as Holy Scripture says, grounded in love of God, just as hatred of neighbor is grounded in hatred of God. For I have power to unite myself truly to another person only if I first unite myself immediately with God, and, in like manner, I can break completely with my neighbor only if I fall away from or turn away from God. (5,230)

It is not that you know, love, and need different things in and apart from God — i.e., in eternity and in time — but rather that you know, love, and need the same things in a different way. If you leave creatures where they are divided, fragmented, incomplete, and in tension, you take them and find them again where they are united and perfect (in God). It is, therefore, a false and misleading idea, held by a number of ascetics, to be told that loving God the Creator contradicts love of creatures, as though we should see God as simply one object alongside of creatures as other objects, etc. But religion commands us expressly to love creatures in the Creator, not apart from him or even against him. It is generally conceded that love does not seek its own and that one does not love a person whom one does not trust farther than one can see him. But there have been and are writers who make an exception to this in the case of love of God and faith in him, seriously maintaining that one ought to be obliged to trust and believe in God only to the extent that one can see or observe him in his activity. Kant, for example, does not reason much better about love than a blind man does about color when he (following Spinoza’s definition: Ideo bonum quia appetimus) defines love as inclination we have toward whatever brings us advantage . . . Love is love only because it is not bound by need or desire or nature. (It is not, therefore, unnatural, however). One can see this in the consecration of sexual desire (which is of itself the zenith of passionate self-seeking, thus complete lovelessness) through love in marriage. (2,178-79)

Baader’s note on this text reads: “The ideal in animal copulation (so-called love) is unfolding the eternal race in the decline of the individual; but the ideal of human love is unfolding the eternal race in the uniqueness of the person, so that it is precisely this person who is posited in accordance with his eternal uniqueness (as a member of the whole). This unique element thus stands for everything in the eyes of his lover. Here we have a case of the Whole (God) shining through in the transfigured uniqueness of the person” (2,179 fn. 3).

The same German philosopher of whom we spoke  deduced even love from a conviction of net advantage that the loved person provides us or leads us to hope that he will. Just as he was infected with the peculiar idiosyncrasy of being unable to tolerate any public (social) prayer, he declared ex cathedra that prayer is pure fetishism. His God (the deaf and dumb law) was no less impersonal and inhuman than Spinoza’s God. We have him to thank particularly for the purism of the new morality, which has removed every personal relationship of man to God and, consequently, all feeling from this morality. (5,282)

Baader believed that he was achieving a profound turning-point in German idealism — similar to Augustine at the beginning of medieval idealism — and indeed for this reason: that the fundamental form of our participation in the ultimate world-ground is governed by the latter’s essential content. If it is, for example, a Categorical Ought — as in the case of Kant and Fichte — then our maximum participation in ultimate being can, in the nature of the case, only be sharing in that Ought (Mit-sollen). If it is primordial Thinking — then sharing in that (Mit-denken). But if it is primordial love — then sharing in love (Mit-lieben). And this love is then — even if one does not allow a primacy of love — ontologically and noetically a power that is independent of the rational act of knowing. One who is touched by Eros has no doubt of the fact that he is closer to the world-mystery when he is in this state than in any other state of exaltation. [J. Sauter]

The more intense the feeling of union between action and reaction (the more inward their union), the more inward is the bond that links product with producer. The more closely united the factors of production are, the more intense is their feeling (affect) and the closer is their union with the product. In the love of God for man also, there is most intimate union together with highest distinction. But distinction, in this case, has to do with essence, whereas union has to do with action. (12,186)
