+Mas podemos voltar ainda mais e até colocar em dúvida o "eu penso" – pelo menos no sentido que ele indubitavelmente tem para Descartes. A afirmação "eu penso" tem, a saber, duas fundações: (1) aquilo que pensa em mim, ou seja, por exemplo, agora exatamente duvidando; (2) aquilo que está refletindo sobre esse pensamento ou duvidando; somente quando o último reconhece o primeiro como idêntico a si mesmo digo: "eu penso". O "eu penso" é, portanto, na verdade, de modo algum algo imediato, apenas emerge através da reflexão que se dirige ao pensamento em mim; esse pensamento, a propósito, também continua independentemente do pensamento que reflete sobre ele, da maneira que, mesmo como uma regra, penso sem dizer para mim mesmo que estou pensando, sem mais uma vez pensar esse pensamento ele mesmo. De fato, o pensamento verdadeiro deve mesmo ser objetivamente independente daquele sujeito que reflete sobre ele; em outras palavras, pensará ainda mais verdadeiramente, a menos que o sujeito interfira nele. Portanto, porque aquilo que está pensando e aquilo que reflete sobre este pensamento e o coloca como um com ele mesmo são duas coisas diferentes, ou porque existe um pensamento objetivo que é independente de mim, segue-se que aquilo que reflete pode enganar-se sobre esta suposta unidade ou, por atribuir o pensamento original a ele mesmo, pode ser precisamente esta atribuição sobre a qual é enganado, e o "eu penso" não pode ter maior significância do que expressões que eu também uso, como "eu digiro", "eu faço sucos", "eu ando" ou "eu cavalgo"; pois não é realmente o ente pensante que anda ou cavalga. Ele pensa em mim, o pensamento continua em mim, é o fato puro, da mesma maneira que posso dizer com a mesma justificativa "sonhei" e "sonhou em mim". A certeza que Descartes atribui à cogito ergo sum não pode ser sustentada nem pelo pensamento; se existe uma certeza, é cega e desprovida de pensamento. A esta certeza, Descartes anexa tudo o mais. Seu princípio é: tudo o que é tão clara e distintamente reconhecido como o "eu sou" também deve ser verdadeiro. Mas, expresso de maneira mais exata, isso só pode significar o mesmo: tudo o que está conectado àquela certeza empírica cega que eu tenho do meu próprio ser, ou que está implicitamente postulado com o "eu sou" ou pode ser provado pertencer ao completude dessa ideia (Vorstellung), devo assumir tão verdadeiro quanto o próprio "eu sou" ele mesmo (não vai além); não se segue, a saber, que também seja assim objetiva e independentemente de mim. A verdade do "eu sou" também pode ser sustentada se eu for obrigado a imaginar todas essas outras coisas, por exemplo, meu corpo e as coisas que aparentemente o influenciam. Uma vez que quero anexar tudo ao "eu sou", devo desistir de ir além desta necessidade da ideia de tudo o mais; também, se eu sou o foco de todo o conhecimento para mim, ser completamente indiferente para mim, se aquilo que sou obrigado a imaginar existe independentemente de imaginá-lo ou não, já que, para usar o próprio exemplo de Descartes, é completamente indiferente a isto o sonhador enquanto estiver sonhando.

+But we can go back even further and even put the I think itself in doubt - at least in the sense it undoubtedly has for Descartes. The statement “I think” has, namely, two foundations: (i) that which thinks in me, that is, e.g., precisely now doubting; (2) that which is reflecting upon this thinking or doubting; only when the latter recognises the former as identical with itself do I say: “I think”. The “I think” is, therefore, in truth in no way something immediate, it only emerges via the reflection which directs itself at the thinking in me; this thinking, by the way, also continues independently of the thinking that reflects upon it, in the way that, even as a rule, I think without saying to myself that I am thinking, without once more thinking this thinking itself. Indeed, true thinking must even be objectively independent of that subject that reflects upon it; in other words, it will think all the more truly the less the subject interferes with it. Therefore, because that which is thinking and that which reflects on this thinking and posits it as one with itself are two different things, or because there is an objective thinking which is independent of me, it follows that that which reflects might deceive itself about that supposed unity, or, by attributing the original thinking to itself, it might be precisely this attribution about which it is deceived, and the “I think” could have no more significance than expressions I also use, such as “I digest”, ‘‘I make juices”, “I walk” or “I ride”; for it is not really the thinking being that walks or rides. It thinks in me, thinking goes on in me, is the pure fact, in the same way as I can say with equal justification: “I dreamed”, and “It dreamed in me”. The certainty which Descartes attributes to the Cogito ergo sum cannot be sustained even by thinking; if there is a certainty, then it is blind and devoid of thought. To this certainty Descartes then attaches everything else. His principle is: Everything which is just as clearly and distinctly recognised as the “I am” must also be true. But, expressed more exactly, this can only mean the same as: Everything that is connected to that blind empirical certainty which I have of my own being, or which is implicite posited with the “I am” or can be proven to belong to the completeness of this idea (Vorstellung), I must assume as just as true as the “I am” itself (it goes no further); it does not follow, namely, that it is also like that objectively and independently of me. The truth of the “I am” can be sustained just as well if I am only compelled to imagine all those other things, e.g., my body and the things that apparently influence it. Once I want to attach everything to the “I am”, I must give up ever getting any further than to this necessity of the idea of everything else; it can also, if I am the focus of all knowledge to myself, be completely indifferent to me whether that which I am compelled to imagine is there independently of imagining it or not, since it, to use Descartes’s own example, is completely indifferent to the dreamer as long as he is dreaming.
