The most impressive single piece of argumentation in this part (to my mind) is the very modern-sounding debate on commitment to the existence of the subject in singular and general statements. The Stoics, to the subsequent dismay of the Neoplatonists, denied that a general term like ‘Man’ in the subject position implied the existence of a Platonic Form, or of anything else. They analysed ‘Man is a rational animal’ as meaning merely, ‘If anything is a man, it is a rational animal’. Alexander replied, on behalf of the Aristotelians, that the Stoics should have given the same treatment to singular terms in the subject position, since ‘Socrates  ’ in ‘Socrates is dead’ can hardly be taken to imply his existence. The rival analyses of such singular statements are in the highest degree impressive. [SorabjiPC3  :27]
